Activity 5 Being successful and popular

Now that you’ve looked through some magazines that are pitched at young people like you, (and no doubt you’ve been exposed to many, many other forms of advertisements), create a list of the six most important elements that are promoted in advertisements to ensure success and popularity.

Using the magazines from Activity 4, or from the magazines used earlier, find an image that represents each of these, creating a collage. You are then to annotate the collage. Below is a list of things to think about:

  • How do you see young people represented in the media?
  • Who or what is included/omitted (ethnicity, body image, etc)?
  • What action/activity/aspiration is being encouraged?
  • How should/shouldn’t a young person behave?
  • What are the key messages?
  • What is the literal and implied message of the advertisements?
  • Is what the advertisers present to teenagers about teenagers realistic? Why or why not?

You will present your collage, and your findings, to the class. Was there anything that surprised you?

Alternatively, for those of you who are all about the digital world, and creating a digital representation, you could use Glogster to create an interactive poster. Your teacher will need to create a basic account in order to provide a safe and secure Glogster environment (it’s free; however, you might need to help your teacher navigate through the website!). You couls also try Smore to create an online flyer. It's free to join, but you'll need an email address to create an account.
