Activity 4 History of beauty

Investigate how beauty was perceived in years gone by. Here are some images and facts to get you started.

  • Twenty years ago, models weighed 8% less than the average woman.
  • Today, they weigh 23% less than the average woman.
  • In 1925 the average Australian woman was 161cm tall and weighed 59kg.
  • In 1925 the average Australian male was 174cm tall and weighed 72kg.
  • In 2010 the average Australian woman is 163cm tall and weighs 71kg.
  • In 2010 the average Australian male is 178cm and weighs 85kg.

Hypothesise about the reasons for these differences — why were women’s and men’s average shapes and sizes different in the early 1900s from the 2000s?

Add your comments to the classroom blog, shared Google doc. or butcher's paper.

Create your own collage of images from different historical periods. Upload the images to Glogster and add commentary to each one, describing the differences you observe. Try to find statistics to support your observations.
